Increased negative camber, lighter suspension components and new 19-inch wheels combine with bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors to improve performance on road and track. However, for those who want to be a little more conspicuous, Volkswagen also offers an optional two-piece tailgate spoiler, larger 19-inch alloy wheels and a louder (and lighter) Akrapovic exhaust system. The Mk 8 Golf will get four gasoline engines and two diesel power plants at launch, all of which use turbocharging and direct injection. The German carmaker has a well-earned reputation for building benchmark performance cars and the latest one looks to be no exception. So, how do we know that this is the Volkswagen Golf R? The Golf R is the understated and underrated antithesis of its red-hot hatchback rivals such as the Ford Focus RS, Subaru WRX STI, and Honda Civic Type R. Its mixture of performance and practicality is expected, but its seamless blending of those two key attributes is unique. The 1.5 TSI 150 petrol engine makes the most sense. Voice control. The Golf R shares the same 10-inch infotainment system and digital instrument cluster as the standard Mk8 Golf – although the system’s displays have all been reconfigured with unique blue-faced graphics. That should make it much more agile than before — particularly when pushed to the limit on track. Physical chassis improvements include stiffer adaptive dampers, a new progressive power steering system, wider alloy wheels and enormous 18-inch disc brakes on the front axle, which replace the old car’s 17-inch units. As such, the performance is just slightly underrated – the 2022 Golf R completes the 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) sprint in 4.7 seconds, while the Tiguan R does it in exactly 4.9 seconds. The engine sends power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox – which, along with the performance hike, Volkswagen says will give the new Golf R a 0–62mph of 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. In 2020, the Volkswagen Golf MK8 was manufactured to take the place of the Golf R. To unlock the full potential of the Golf R, the latest aftermarket upgrades are sure to be essential assets. I don’t know what Volkswagen was thinking taking out the next-generation Golf R prototype wearing its birthday suit, especially with so many Peeping Toms out in the wild, cameras on-hand, ready to take photos of the hot hatch in all its glory. 2021 VW Golf GTE is a Hybrid Performance Golf Much is different, too, but let’s start with what stays the same. New VW Golf R performance. VW Car-Net Hotspot 4 can turn your car into a Wi-Fi Hotspot, allowing your passengers to stream on up to four devices. The Gen3 2.0 TSI EA888 unit responds so well to tuning, that it’s now possible to create a big-power Golf R, without the need to open up the engine. 5. New “Race” and “Drift” modes accessed via the flat-bottomed steering wheel’s “R” button give the car more edge than before, promising sideways thrills and a stronger appetite for apexes in the right circumstances. While the new VW Golf R features the same basic recipe of combining a potent four-cylinder turbocharged engine with VW’s all-wheel drive system, the devil’s in the details of this latest model. As with the old Ford Focus RS, the new VW Golf R has an electronically controlled rear differential capable of shifting power across the back axle, diverting power to the outside rear wheel. A reworked version of VW’s 2.0-litre turbo motor makes 235kW and 420Nm (22KW and 40Nm more than before), driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. There is a catch, though. Stand-out features include a two-stage electronic stability programme, a sophisticated traction control system and a new torque vectoring system which can not only distribute the engine’s power between the front and rear axles – but also between the two rear wheels. Drivers can even choose between two dashboard designs, centred around either a circular or horizontal rev-counter – and, when driving in manual mode, the dashboard will provide a visible shift prompt to remind the driver to change gear. Volkswagen’s Golf R blends comfort and performance like few other cars.Source:Supplied. As with most hot Volkswagens, the Golf R’s chassis is loaded with clever technology that’s designed to improve on-track performance. In the same press release issued for the Golf 8, VW mentions the most powerful version will have over 300 horsepower. First deliveries are expected to arrive in early 2021. Buyers also get a customisable ambient lighting system and a smattering of “R” logos for the car’s seats and floor mats. The least powerful version is based on the proven three-cylinder engine with one-litre displacement. Volkswagen’s Golf 8 performance range has reached its completion with the arrival of the new Golf R, the flagship all-wheel drive model that’ll join the GTI and GTI Clubsport next year.
